Trade barrier summary

The Safe Food for Canada Regulations (SFCR) has strict rules on packaging. Consumer prepackaged bottled wine may only be traded between provinces or imported to Canada in a container with a size corresponding to a net quantity by volume of 50, 100, 200, 250, 375, 500 or 750 millimetres or 1, 1.5, 2, 3 or 4 litres. This only applies to sale to, or by, a duty-free shop or free samples.

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) will not retail alcohol products that may appeal to persons under the legal drinking age due to their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandate. This includes using adverts with certain cartoons and these decisions can have the potential to use subjective interpretation.
