UK vehicle imports into Jamaica no longer need to verify their proof of origin documents
in JamaicaTrade barrier summary
There have previously been lengthy customs documentation checks on high-value vehicles imported into Jamaica from the UK. This has caused significant delays and cashflow issues for Jamaican dealerships. As a result, these delays have disincentivised dealerships to sell UK vehicles.
There has been collaborative engagement between the UK’s and Jamaica’s governments on this issue. It has resulted in the ‘UK originating status’ of several specific UK car models being successfully verified. This status confirms the eligibility for duty-free imports into Jamaica without further customs checks for these vehicles. As a result, future imports of these models will no longer be routinely required to verify their originating status. This will save time, reduce administrative burdens and reduce cash flow challenges for UK car exporters. It will encourage increased UK car imports into Jamaica and subsequent sales through Jamaican dealerships.
