Market access for UK-based businesses secured in connection with Italy's artificial intelligence (AI) legislation
in ItalyTrade barrier summary
In May 2024, the Italian government published draft legislation to align their national AI legislation with the EU's Artificial Intelligence Regulation Act 2024/1689.
Italy adopted the National Artificial Intelligence Law on 17 September 2025. Unlike the earlier draft, the legislation does not impose geographical restrictions on data localisation, such as data sovereignty requirements. This change now allows UK-based businesses operating in the sector access to Italy's AI market without limitations.
